Dear Friends
Since
the financing of the Inclues
Network via a project subsidy of the European Commission's Comenius
Programme (2003-2006) has stopped, the Network has been ever
so active. Presentations have been given in Italy (Naples) on a
national conference on good practices; in Paris, Antwerp, Prague,
Moscow, Göteborg, Venice, Santiago de Chile, Cluj. The
people joined in this Network have continued to strive for a rise in
quality of inclusive education that is not only social, but also
ensures a learning environment that is challenging enough and
stimulates the child's overall development; and we are not only
talking about the children with special needs, but about all
children. Many children in this world are denied basic rights, shelter, food, an affective and nurturing environment, depriving them of the necessary environment to grow into fully capable individuals. Children with a disability are even more vulnerable. You might think that what you do is a drop in the ocean,
but every drop makes a difference if we are working towards a more
welcoming society.
I wish you a flourishing, more inclusive 2008!
Jo Lebeer, Inclues coordinator,
University of Antwerp, BE

Prague - Czech Association Rytmus works at establishing
Good practices in inclusion in education in the Czech and Slovak
Republic. On November 8-9 2007 they
organized an international workshop and conference together with Inclues partners Centre for
Studies on Inclusive Education, University of Antwerp and Charles
University, as well as with Mary Shuh from the USA and people from
Madrid. Inclusive education is growing rapidly in the Czech & Slovak
Republics and it is promoted by the government, but funds are lacking,
and teachers don't know how to do. Inclusion is too often reduced to
"social inclusion" , interpreted as "just being part", but without
proper educational programmes and real participation in educational
activities. Rytmus tries to do something about it and offers assistance and
is working in a spearheading way.
